Summary
Harriet Beecher Stowe's, Uncle Tom's Cabin, shows what slavery was like in the South. When Eliza, a slave woman owned by the kind slave owner Mr. Shelby, overhears her master talking about selling her son to a mean slaveowner she knows the only way to save him was to escape through the Underground Railroad to meet up with her husband George, who was escaping to Canada. She also finds out that Mr. Shelby was also planning to sell Uncle Tom, so she goes and warns him. But Uncle Tom refuses to be disloyal to his friend Mr. Shelby so he just stays on the plantation until Mr. Shelby would sell him away.
Haley, the slaveowner who bought Eliza's son and Uncle Tom, still searched for Eliza who was still escaping to Canada. Fortunately, a kind abolitionist named Mr. Symmes helped Eliza and her son get to the house of Senator Bird. Senator Bird , however, just voted for a bill that prevented the help of runaway slaves. But after he listens to Eliza's story he changes his mind and decides to help her. Senator Bird leads Eliza and her son to another home that is part of the Underground Railroad where she later finds out that her husband George was currently staying there. The reunited family later boarded a ship to Canada and to freedom.
Meanwhile, everyone at Mr. Shelby's plantation is sad about the news of Uncle Tom leaving. Uncle Tom isn't mad at anyone and he just continues to read his Bible. When Uncle Tom boards the ship that will take him to Haley's plantation he meets a little girl. After Uncle Tom saved the five year old girl from drowning, she wants her daddy to buy Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom enjoys living on "Little Eva's" plantation, but soon "Little Eva" gets really sick and dies. Before she died she told her daddy to free Uncle Tom and the other slaves. The dad died before he could complete this task, so his wife sold Uncle Tom to another plantation.
This plantation was owned by a very mean man who beats his slaves brutally. Uncle Tom, however, keeps reading his Bible and does not try to escape. One day Mr. Shelby arrives to try and save Uncle Tom only to find him sick and dying. After the burial Mr. Shelby heads back to his plantation to free all of his slaves, but on the way he meets a slave from Legree's plantation, Cassy. He learns that she is the mother of Eliza. So Cassy goes to Canada with another runaway slave and reunites with her family. Then the family goes to Liberia to find a freedom colony for ex-slaves.
