Purpose
The purpose of Harriet Beecher Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, was to allow people in the year of 1850 to really see and understand what life was like for slaves. This book was written during the time that America had just created the Missouri Compromise line. This line showed that everything under the line was a slave state and everything above the line was free labor state. Slavery was a very touchy topic during that time, nobody really talked about it and it took alot of courage for Harriet Stowe to write this book.
Harriet heared from some friends about how slaves were treated, but she couldn't believe it. She went to interview some people and put bits and pieces together and wrote the book Uncle Tom's Cabin. The book later sold thousands of copies. The people on the north of the Missuri Compromise line could not believe that people were being treated that way. The people on the south of the Missuri Compromise line did not want people to see how horrible slavery was. They wanted Harriet Beecher Stowe killed.
The south later made a law banning anyone from reading the book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. People were severely punished for just having the book in their house. Despite all the threats and bannings Harriet Beecher Stowe recieved, her book was one of the most influencial books ever written.
